In a few hours, the Husky's, of my alma mater, the St Cloud State University, will lace the skates up and take on Maine. It's NCAA playoff time!
Many have written the Husky's off, saying they won't be able to win the big game, being 0-6 in NCAA playoff games previous to today.
Why am I so pumped up? Two words.
Bobby Goepfert.
In all my years of watching Husky hockey, BG is by far the best goaltender we have ever had, or the best that I have ever seen in the National Concrete Center. He did not fare very well at the Excel Energy Center last weekend.
Bobby is going home to New York now and, the champion that he is, he does not want to play his final college game in New York. It's a great homecoming for BG. He played his first two seasons with Hockey East power Providence. He has experience in these East Coast arenas, with the fans, and the programs.
BG is going to prove the skeptics wrong, put the Husky's on his back and take us to St Louis...
A WCHA final of North Dakota / St Cloud will be a thing of beauty.

111 minutes, 33 seconds...and a win
Wow. What a game. The Huskies finally prevailed last night, riding the nations top goaltender and Hobey Baker candidate, Bobby Goepfert to a 3-2 triple overtime win over the UMD Bulldogs.
Sadly enough, someone had to lose that game. Going from overtime to overtime, seeing both goaltenders make amazing save after amazing save was awesome.
Off to the WCHA Final Five go the Huskies. A match up with North Dakota, the hottest team in College Hockey, is on the horizon. SCSU, still 3rd in the pairwise rankings, have secured a #1 seed in the NCAA's, but to take the WCHA final five is something all of us want.
Josh Johnson, the UMD goaltender, was all world this weekend. If not for a fluke goal on Saturday night, Duluth would be in St Paul this weekend. I enjoyed watching the great net minders all weekend long.
Having spent the better part of my college winters at the National Hockey Center and it's famous Dogg Pound, I wish our fans had been a bit more respectful at the end of the greatest college hockey game most of us will ever see.
Yeah, we call out the opposing goaltender after every goal, but after 3 regular periods and almost 3 full 20 minute overtime periods, it seemed to me a bit much. Johnson had a helluva series!
Has anyone ever seen 67 saves? Half of Goepfert's 67 saves were due to his ninja like skill in goal. I still have no idea how on earth he stopped a few of those shots, he's simply the best goaltender to ever play at the NHC.
So, what's going to happen this weekend.
Thursday night, Michigan Tech plays Wisconsin in the play in game.
Wisconsin should win, 5-2.
Friday at 2pm, the Huskies match up with North Dakota, and one of my favorite players in the WCHA, Ryan Duncan. Call me a homer, but I have SCSU winning 4-3.
Wisconsin plays the rodents, Golden Gophers on Friday night. Wisconsin will upset the Gophers 3-2.
North Dakota will be Minnesota in the consolation final, score? It doesn't matter.
St Cloud will beat Wisconsin to be the WCHA champion. The Badgers have it tough as they will have to play 3 games in consecutive nights. The Huskies got their scare this weekend and will fix their power play woes this weekend in St Paul, propelling the Huskies to their first National Championship.
Anyway, 111 minutes, 33 seconds. It took 4 and a half hours to play it though!

Snowed in at my Meeker County outpost
Well, they got 15 inches about 15 minutes south of here. We look to have about a foot here with more coming soon, according to accu weather radar. Looks like I get to dig out today.
How about them Huskies? A swwep of the Golen Gophers! (Left the d out since the Gophers played no D).
Will they be #1 in nation this week.
North Dakota is coming to town this week, it should be a great series. I think my sister, brother in law, girlfriend and I will be at the National Concrete Center Saturday night for the game.
Anyone watch the Huskies last night? With all the snow flying, that's all we could do out here, besides watching "Man of the Year".
Homers. That's what the Fox Sports people were, complete homers. No credit to a great Husky squad.
I love the Gopher fans who chant "Gopher rejects" when my boys sweep you and win the season series 2-0-2.
"Man of the Year". What a disappointing movie. I thought it would be a lot more funny. Robin Williams had some great one liners, but I guess I expected more.

Husky Hockey (Updated)
Off to see the #5 ranked St Cloud State University Husky hockey team play Alaska Anchorage, at the National Concrete Center in St Cloud.
It's my first SCSU game of the year, a rarity for me to miss so many games, and it will be a good time. It's going to be Dori's second college hockey game, after seeing UND and Wisconsin in Grand Forks, and the atmosphere will be 180 degrees different. Dori's sister Mandy is joining to frey as well...
Off we go and GO Huskies!
(Update) Huskies won 4-2. They were a bit sluggish in the 1st period but with an All American Goaltender and the top freshman class in college hockey, we pulled through to continue to long unbeaten streak.
Good times were had!

The Gophers
Friday night, beyond cooking some world class stir fry and sipping on some yummy cocktails, I was glued to the TV watching the news on Saddam. Therefore, I missed out on the Gophers football game.
Jason and I talked later in the night, after Matt called him to tell him how impressive the Gophers were, being ahead 35-7 at halftime. I was just as shocked at Jason.
I never checked out the score again...until I picked up the Strib on Saturday morning.
Wow...Fire Glen Mason now! The Gophers collapsed...lost 44-41 in overtime.
So Sid Hartman devoted about 4 column inches, of his 100, to talking about the Gopher debacle. He's the biggest Mason apologist around.
He also wrote about the Twins Stadium problems to acquire the land for the stadium.
Ah Sid...just stop!

A sports thread
Its been a while...
Vikes. Yikes! Despite a big win yesterday, it's going to be a tough end to the season. Brad Johnson is done.
Gohpher B-Ball. Ouch. Outrebounded by Arkansas Little Rock 43-16? Monson should have to endure this season, he created this mess!
Gopher football. We have heard the crap about being in 7 straight bowl games...and that by going to a bowl game, we get 6 more weeks of practice to develop talent, build the future. When will we see the fruits of this? Mason drives me nuts!
Twins. Please, for the love of humanity, sign someone who can help us! I hate bandaid solutions.
T-Wolves. Please trade for AI. When I get a new job, I may buy tickets to see this. Now, I am bored with this team...
UND. I must admit, the Ralph Englestad arena is a beautiful place. Does it have a lot of Indian heads, oh yeah. But you know, you really don't notice them unless you are looking for them. Its a top notch state of the art arena, in the middle of no where!
SCSU. The hockey team is on a roll! #2 in the WCHA, 8-0-3 in the past 11 games, last lost to UND in the Ralph (before the election). Go Huskies!
